✏️ The Small Edits That Make a Big Difference
Every writer knows the thrill of
finishing a draft—that moment when the story is finally out of your head and
onto the page. But between “finished draft” and “ready to publish,” there’s a
quiet stage that often gets overlooked: the small edits.
These aren’t the sweeping rewrites or
the big structural decisions. They’re the subtle adjustments that strengthen
clarity, sharpen voice, and help your reader glide through the story without
friction.
Here are a few tiny edits that
consistently elevate a manuscript:
1. Tightening dialogue tags: A simple shift from “she exclaimed loudly” to “she
exclaimed” or even just “she said” can make dialogue feel more natural and
confident. Redundant adverbs are usually the culprit, so trimming those is a
great place to start. Trust your characters' words (and your readers) to carry
the emotion. That said, expressive tags like “whispered” or “murmured”
absolutely have a home in romance. Just use them with intention.
2. Clearing out filler words: Just, really, very,
suddenly—they sneak in everywhere. Removing even half of them gives your
prose more authority.
3. Choosing intentional repetition: Repetition can be powerful when it’s
purposeful. But accidental repetition? It dilutes impact. A quick scan for
repeated phrases can make your writing feel cleaner instantly.
4. Checking for rhythm: Read a paragraph aloud. If you
stumble, your reader will too. A small tweak to sentence length or structure
can restore flow. I
find it helpful to use a text-to-speech tool—even your phone or computer's
built-in reader works. I can't tell you how many times I've heard something
that I didn't see was wrong.
5. Aligning tone with intention: Sometimes a sentence is technically
correct but emotionally off. A gentle shift in word choice can bring it back
into harmony with the scene.
Small edits don’t always get the
spotlight, but they’re the quiet heroes of a polished manuscript. They’re the
difference between “good enough” and “this feels right.”
And if you’re in the middle of a draft
right now, consider this your reminder: the little things matter. They’re often
what make your voice shine.
